What could I say to you so that you would give me a job?
It needs to be decent job, one that pays relatively well, provides good opportunities for growth and advancement, if that doesn’t exist, could I, well I don’t know.
A so goes the London Business School Milk Round. Apparently, Milk Round is a UK term and isn’t used in the US. The concept is fairly simple – think cow (that’s us) think farmer looking for new milk (employer). They come around twice a year to milk (no cows here, but we do have a bull) for new employees.
The experience is kind of fun. We get a little presentation and then retire to the marquee outside for food, drinks and a little chatting. Young eager MBA types horde around company representatives asking insightful questions like ‘are there long hours’ or ‘what’s your overall impression of this business.’ I have to give the company representatives credit for patiently answering each question. Hell, sometimes the reps even put a little thought into them.
To me, getting mindless questions from MBAs looking for a little face time is a lot like the question ‘What time is the 3 o’clock parade’ I used to receive at Disney. In the training, they warmed us the question would come and sure enough it did. In fact, I remember getting the question twice in three months. Our training required us to look at the family, normally with two-kids and Goofy hats on, and reply “Well Sir, the 3 o’clock parade will be later today at 3pm at the Magic Kingdom.”
Our MBA recruiters answer the same questions with about the same level of involvement I used to have when fielding the old 3pm question.
My best and worst moment came last night during a presentation. It was dragging on and on so I started drawing pictures. A golf course, then signs, finally when the head of strategy wouldn’t shut up, I drew the Energizer Bunny.
The idea that we could have been in a bad Superbowl commercial struck me as damn funny. So funny that I started giggling – thankfully no one heard me. Figuring laughing during a boring speech would be bad show, I quickly turned over the paper.
Enough writing in the Blog – time to draft some applications for summer Internships.
Oh yeah, before I forget: I don’t know if he reads this or not but my little bro’ Christian turned 14 last Friday. Happy Birthday kiddo!
