I love creative and inspired ideas especially ones that could, within a relatively quick amount of time, become a reasonable biofuel option in most places.
The sum of the story is that the police department in Manila are tired of getting hammered by oil speculators high gasoline prices so they’ve struck a deal with McDonald’s to use their old cooking oil (french fry grease) for biodiesel.
I’d have to imagine that McDonald’s has a lot of this stuff left over so they get a nice tidy revenue stream and the Manila police department gets to run their cars on a cheaper fuel. This solution doesn’t do much for the environment but unless we’re converting homes and businesses to green energy (since that makes up the majority of carbon emissions) we’re not talking about a huge piece of the green pie.
