A quick hop home to surprise my grandmother on her birthday and I’m back on the small island preparing for class and an evening presentation.
The trip home taught me something important. Just because staying in a little room appears to be the best approach to work, sometimes – especially for creative stuff – it isn’t. During the flight over, I was able to read a Fast Company magazine and just relax. From that starting point, my cover letter to American Express just flowed.
Rather than trying to write it by force (sit down, outline, etc), I was able to let the ye old mind wander some and find some really good writing. Will it get me an interview? Don’t know. What I do know is that process was far more enjoyable than in this little room trying to find the right words with the same old inspiration.
Here’s the tip: getting bogged down with the letters and having trouble finding something creative to say; get out and do something that allows you to both think and relax like reading a magazine with a tablet on your lap. It may not work for everyone but that approach certainly worked for me.
Time to head to class. To rest for the weiry.
